Little Women is a novel by American author Lisa May Alcott, which was originally published in two volumes in 1868 and 1869.A beautiful novel which revolves around the period of 1860s , shows an era of self-sacrifice and love so strong and rare to find. The plot revolves around the March family girls - Meg, Jo, Elizabeth, Amy and their mother Marmee who strive everyday to make ends meet. Their father who is in the army, falls ill because of which Marmee decides to go to take care of her husband. Jo cuts her beautiful long hair to collect enough money to send her mother to her father. In Marmee’s absence, Beth contracts scarlet fever and dies. Later Meg marries, Jo moves to New York City, Amy leaves home and moves to Paris. Amy marries Laurie, a family friend who was once in love with Jo.

Jo meets a Professor Baehr and settles down with him opening a school on her dead aunt’s estate. In the end, all the four sisters stay content and happy in their new lives. The plot also strongly displays the love for family and the love towards our neighbours, a quality hard to find. No matter how painful the journey, the end will always be a happy one.

Throughout the novel, one usually finds oneself totally captivated by Jo’s character. She is, at times, hilariously realistic and it can be easily seen why so many people identify with her; especially when people kept walking in to find her crying over various books

Little women has been read as a family drama that validates virtue over wealth", but also "as a means of escaping that life by women who knew its gender constraints only too well".
